Figure Drawing_Dos

Last night was the second night  of the figure drawing session. we had a great model and a great small group. turned out to be a good night. i met a fellow artist there for his first night attending and he seemed excited about it which is great! david mack also showed up which was a real treat. he did some fantastic ink drawings that were pretty remarkable. everyone did some good work. i was very pleased with my warmup gestures, especially the top right one. and my final study was something that i was ok with as well. i continued to try to stay a bit looser and let some shadow groups melt together and let some things fall back. it was fun. overall a successful night!

 

Try Try Try Try Try Try Again...

i rescanned in my rocketeer image at work to see if it turned out any better than my crappy home scanner. i was initially really pissed at that drawing, but after taking some time away, i find some redeeming things. so i messed with the scan a bit and i think this one turned out much better.

i also started another ink drawing with the intention of using watercolor to add my value/color to it. but what i thought was a singular problem with the rocketeer drawing has turned out to be an issue with my ink. it's proving to not be completely waterproof. i set out to do this viking image and use some wet media, but now i know that it's going to smear everywhere if i put down water. so, scratch that idea and save it for later. i guess i'll have to do this digitally. right now i'm just trying to figure out color, value, etc.

i feel that i'm starting to find something, but i'm really just still feeling it out. i dont really know where to go with all of this....

hopefully it comes together sooner rather than later cuz i'm starting to fade a little bit.

"Top 100" or "Drawing From Real Life!"

i got a notice in the mail the other day from Artworks displaying the top 100 of 2008 from the Secret show. lucky enough my name is on the list. however, oddly, the lincoln drawing is the one in the group which i find sort of strange. i think it was my weakest one...but i'll take it! it's a really fun show to take part in and i'm excited to be in the top 100 again!

i started the figure drawing session again tonight. i was a bit rusty but it was fun. im going to attempt to use rely less on line over these ten weeks, and hopefully use broader strokes and concentrate on mass/volume instead of just trying to make pretty drawings. hopefully that will be the outcome, but i'd like to learn some new stuff.

here's the finished test piece i was working on. it turned out ok. it's a bit dark, and i really should've spent more time on the drawing. overall i like some of the things happening, but i got too distracted by the paint. my intent was to use the paint for texture and a bit of color, but let the ink do the talking. i ended up painting too much.

i'm going to try again. i think i might use more watercolor in the next one so that i can't get too carried away with the paint. this is mostly oil with some digital fixes, but the next one will hopefully be mostly ink.

Rocket-update

i've been working a bit more on this rocketeer piece, as well as the wild things drawing. i dont have any pics of that yet tho cuz it's not very far. i'm still just playing with things, but so far i'm sorta digging it. it's a poorly lit picture so the color is pretty off but you get the idea. i'm doing my 2nd round of inks to see how things will come together. i plan on finishing the inks when everything is dry, then doing a couple of final washes to really seal it all together.

it's fun and im enjoying myself so hopefully it turns out.
